Why didn't China invade the mongols before they were invaded by the mongols?

During the reign of Genghis Khan, why didn't China invade the mongols with both their numerical and technological superiority before they were invaded by the mongols? Why didn't China didn't consider the rise of Mongols as a threat to its security? Did mongols have that much strong border protection?
