I'm thinking about starting to take steroids. What are the dangers?

I've been regularly weight training now for the last 18 months (4 times a week). Although I have put a lot of muscle m on in this time I am now finding it difficult to go to that next level. A friend of mine has in the past taken steroids, stating they 100% work. What drawbacks are there and are there alternatives?
